On the design, functions, and biomedical applications of high-throughput dielectrophoretic micro-/nanoplatforms: a review
As an efficient, rapid and label-free micro-/nanoparticle separation technique, dielectrophoresis (DEP) has attracted widespread attention in recent years, especially in the field of biomedicine, which exhibits huge potential in biomedically relevant applications such as disease diagnosis, cancer cell screening, biosensing, and others. DEP technology has been greatly developed recently from the low-flux laboratory level to high-throughput practical applications. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of DEP technology in biomedical applications, including firstly the design of various types and materials of DEP electrode and flow channel, design of input signals, and other improved designs. Then, functional tailoring of DEP systems with endowed specific functions including separation, purification, capture, enrichment…

Robust Data Integration Method for Classification of Biomedical Data
Robust Data Integration Method for Classification of Biomedical Data We present a protocol for integrating two types of biological data – clinical and molecular – for more effective classification of patients with cancer. The proposed approach is a hybrid between early and late data integration strategy. In this hybrid protocol, the set of informative clinical features is extended by the classification results based on molecular data sets. The results are then treated as new synthetic variables. The hybrid protocol was applied to METABRIC breast cancer samples and TCGA urothelial bladder carcinoma samples. Various data types were used for clinical endpoint prediction: clinical data, gene expression, somatic copy number aberrations, RNA-Seq, methylation, and…

Our Arduous Research Journey from Preeclampsia to Alzheimer’s Disease – Report from the Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) for Reproductive Health
This article is contributed by the COBRE for Reproductive Health. The programmatic and scientific goals of this COBRE support a multidisciplinary, translational, and innovative program in women’s reproductive health. The research projects focus on using pre-clinical and human models to understand mechanisms of preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, preterm birth, IVF pregnancies, and the application of contemporary computational approaches to identify the networks and pathways underlying these devastating pregnancy complications. We discuss how novel observations emanating from the preeclampsia project can be leveraged to understand chronic diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Proteinopathy is a hallmark feature of neurodegenerative disorders such as AD. We recently reported that preeclampsia (PE), a severe pregnancy…

Biomedical articles share annotations with their citation neighbors
Biomedical articles share annotations with their citation neighbors Background: Numerous efforts have been poured into annotating the wealth of knowledge contained in biomedical articles. Thanks to such efforts, it is now possible to quantitatively explore relations between these annotations and the citation network at large scale. Results: With the aid of several large and small annotation databases, this study shows that articles share annotations with their citation neighborhood to the point that the neighborhood’s most common annotations are likely to be those appearing in the article. Conclusions: These findings posit that an article’s citation neighborhood defines to a large extent the article’s annotated content. Thus, citations should be considered as a foundation for future…
